Even with the latest pre-emergent control products, crabgrass can be difficult to eradicate once it gains a foothold on your lawn. Following are our recommended steps to take to ged rid of crabgrass once and for all.
How to Get Rid of Crabgrass Once and For All
Step 1: Purchase MSMA Crabgrass Killer which is a chemical formulated to specifically attack crabgrass roots. It’s used for post-emergence control for crabgrass and other grassy weeds such as barnyardgrass, sandbur and dallisgrass. To treat for blue grass mix a formula (see Step 2, below) of 2 oz (4 tablespoons) in 1 gallon of water to cover 200 sq. ft. and spot treat infested areas.
Step 2: Use a “spreader sticker” such as Wilt Pruf with the weed killer for optimal application and coverage. A spreader sticker will help the weed control agent adhere to lawn and foliage and prevent wash-off of the application during unexpected rain storms.
Step 3: Apply MSMA Crabgrass Killer with Wilt Pruf
to the lawn in the morning (after dew has evaporated) on a sunny, calm day to allow maximum absorption. Higher temperatures result in a quicker uptake of this product for faster control. However, do not apply MSMA Crabgrass Killer
if temperatures exceed 90 degrees. If daytime temperatures are expected to exceed 90 degrees, apply the product in early morning when it is cooler.
Once treated the weed should begin to wilt and brown within 5 days. Spot treat as needed every two weeks until crabgrass is gone, which should take no more than 2 to 3 applications for even the most mature crabgrass. The combination of these two products will eliminate crabgrass from your established lawn.
For new lawns consider New Lawn Crabgrass Preventer which is formulated specifically for newly-seeded lawns.
